Why did 480 Nigerian soldiers fighting Boko Haram flee to Cameroon?

Why did 480 Nigerian soldiers fighting to Boko Haram flee to Cameroon?

Conflicting reports are trailing the inglorious fleeing of Nigerian almost 500 Nigerian soldiers fighting Boko Haram into Cameroon. While the Nigerian Defence Headquarters had said this was a tactical move, facts on ground suggest that the soldiers had fled being killed in a ferocious attack by Boko Haram terrorists. The assumed leader of the Islamic jihadi organistion, Abubakar Shekau, recently released a video claiming dominance over Gwoza town and declaring it an Islamic caliphate. The insurgents also seized a  police training academy,  near the town of Gwoza. The video also showed Nigerian soldiers abandoning their posts and fleeing from the approaching terrorists.

http:///BidVertiser.dbm?pid=553027&bid=1549605marketing The news of the defection of 480 Nigerian soldiers to Cameroon was broken by the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) Africa, which saidthrough its Twitter handle twitter.com/BBCAfrica that the soldiers defected to the northern city of Maroua, in Cameroon.
The Biafran had reported that Nigerian soldiers fighting the terrorists in the north eastern part of Nigeria due to what they alleged as the inability of the Nigerian military HQ to equip them with superior weapons to combat the insurgents.

Cameroonian military authorities yesterday confirmed the disarming of Nigerian soldiers in the country. Confirming the disarming of Nigerian soldiers, a Cameroonian Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Didier Badjek, said those involved are now being accommodated in schools. Clashes are said to be continuing in the border town of Gamboru/Ngala.

Boko Haram’s five-year-old insurgency intensified this year, despite the deployment of thousands of extra troops to the worst affected areas, after the removal of the General Azubuike Ihejirika, a Biafran, as the Chief of Army Staff.  Ihejirika had successfully kept the terrorist at bay at the fringes of Nigerian border with Cameroon and Chad. The terrorists were however energized with the removal of Ihejirika and other services chiefs late last year. There has been various allegations by junior Nigeria military officers that the Muslims in the high commands of the army are sabotaging the fight against Boko Haram. Many high ranking millitary officers are facing court martial for for aiding Boko Haram with military equipment and intel.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has however, stated that the Nigerians soldiers crossed into Cameroon in a tactical move. The  DHQ statement stated that it was the battle against Boko Haram across the Nigeria/Cameroon border that took Nigerian troops to the neighbouring country.
The statement by the Defence Headquarters noted that the report and insinuation that the troops defected to Cameroon was not true and therefore, misleading. “Issues concerning Nigerian troops who found themselves in Cameroon during fierce battle with terrorists was just part of the offensive against the insurgents that operate sometimes across borders,” DHQ noted.

In a post on its website Defence Headquarters said: “The Nigerian troops that were found in Cameroon was as a result of a sustained battle between the troops and the terrorists around the borders with Cameroon, which saw the Nigerian troops charging through the borders in a tactical manoeuvre.

“Eventually, they found themselves on Cameroonian soil. Being allies, the normal protocol of managing such incident demanded that the troops submit their weapons to assure the friendly country that they were not on a hostile mission.

“Following necessary discussions between Nigerian and Cameroonian military authorities, the issues have been sorted out. Subsequently, the troops are on their way back to join their unit in Nigeria.
“The reference to the incidence as defection is therefore, not appropriate considering the discussion between the two countries’ military leadership and the series of contacts with the soldiers who have confirmed that they are safe.”
“Meanwhile, troops are repelling a group of terrorists who are trying to enter the country through Gamboru/Ngala. A group of them who fizzled into the town are being pursued.”

Snake Pepper soup: Dead cobra head kills chef in China

Snake Pepper soup: Dead cobra head kills chef in China
A chef cooking a soup dish from cobra flesh died in China after he was bitten by the snake’s head – 20 minutes after it was cut off.
Peng Fan was preparing the rare Asian delicacy from the Indochinese spitting cobra when the snake’s severed head bit him with venom as he was throwing it into the bin, The Mirror reported.
Peng died before he could be treated in hospital with life-saving anti-venom, police said.

“It is a highly unusual case, but it appears to be just an accident,” a police spokesman said. “He prepared the snake himself and was just unlucky.
“There was nothing that could be done to save the man. Only the anti-venom could have helped, but this was not given in time. It was just a tragic accident.”
Diners who were eating in the restaurant at the time of the incident described screams coming from the kitchen.
Lin Sun, 44, who was dining with his wife Su said: “We were in the restaurant having a meal for my wife’s birthday when suddenly there was a lot of commotion.
“We did not know what was happening but could hear screams coming from the kitchen. There were calls for a doctor in the restaurant but unfortunately by the time medical assistance arrived, the man had already died. After we heard that we did not continue with our meal.”
According to snake expert Yang Hong-Chang, all reptiles can function for up to an hour after losing their body parts.
“It is perfectly possible that the head remained alive and bit Peng’s hand,” he said. “By the time a snake has lost its head, it’s effectively dead, as basic body functions have ceased, but there is still some reflexive action.

“It means snakes have the capability of biting and injecting venom even after the head has been severed.”

Strong earthquake shakes California: Dozens injured, state of emergency declared in the wake of largest quake in 25 years

Strong earthquake shakes California: Dozens injured, state of emergency declared in the wake of largest quake in 25 years

Over 80 people were treated at hospital and a state of emergency was declared in the city of Napa, after California was shaken by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake.

The 6.0 quake struck at 3:20 am (10:20 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. Its epicenter was 6 kilometers from American Canyon and 9 kilometers from the city of Napa, at a depth of 10.8 kilometers from the surface.

Residents of the cities of San Francisco, some 40 miles away, and Davis, just over 70 miles away, quickly took to Twitter reporting feeling the quake.

“Everything was just shaking, the hanging lamps waving back and forth,” said Omar Lopez, 24, night clerk at a small inn in St. Helena, 15 minutes outside of Napa. “Guests came into the front desk after the quake and they said the swimming pool looked like a bunch of people had jumped in at the same time.”

Three people – two adults and one child – sustained critical wounds. At least 87 people were treated for minor injuries at Napa hospital after the earthquake, the spokesperson told AP. Most patients have cuts, bumps, bruises, said Vanessa DeGier, spokeswoman for the hospital in Napa.

The quake caused six significant fires including a blaze at the Napa Valley mobile home park, where 4 trailers were completely destroyed, according to local firefighters. Up to 16 buildings are now considered uninhabitable; access to many others is restricted.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in Napa. He said conditions of “extreme peril” to people and property exist in Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties.

“There’s collapses, fires,” said Napa Fire Capt. Doug Bridewel. “That’s the worst shaking I’ve ever been in.”

The city government said there were 50 gas main breaks and 30 water main leaks. Three historic buildings in Napa were also damaged, including the county courthouse, and at least two downtown commercial buildings were severely damaged.

“Oh, I felt it. When I woke up I was lying on the floor. It kicked me out of bed,” said Keith, a man who lives in Napa adding that he went right into his job at the front desk of a Napa hotel, leaving his house in disorder. “The house is a mess, everything is out of the cabinets in the kitchen. Dressers tipped over.”

At least 15,000 customers were left without power across Northern California, the utility provider Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s map showed following the massive quake. http:///BidVertiser.dbm?pid=553027&bid=1549605marketing

The shaking set off car alarms and had local residents running out of their houses in the middle of the night.

The moment the quake struck was captured by CCTV at one of the households in the area – the video is now circulating online.

The USGS initially measured the tremor as “moderate,” but then it was upgraded to “violent.” The immediate hours after the event saw at least five aftershocks measuring at 1.6 magnitude. Aftershocks of up to 5.0 magnitude may continue throughout the next week.

The quake has been described as the most powerful in the area since the deadly 1989 Loma Prieta 6.9 magnitude earthquake, in which 63 people were killed and more than 3,000 injured.

German cannibal police officer goes on trial over murder

A German police officer has gone on trial over accusations of killing and chopping up a man whom he met on a website for cannibalism fetishists.

The court in Dresden, which was started on Friday, heard how Detlev Guenzel, who worked as a police handwriting expert, met his victim, Wojciech Stempniewicz, online.

Prosecutors say the 56-year-old policeman is accused of strangling, dismembering and burying the victim’s body parts in the garden of his bed-and-breakfast in the Erz Mountains in eastern Germany last November.

“He killed and dismembered him to get sexual stimulation and then later to get sexual stimulation by watching the video he made,” Dresden chief prosecutor Andreas Feron said.

Guenzel faces a possible 15 years in prison if he is found guilty of murdering the 59-year-old businessman from Hannover and “disturbing the peace of the dead.”

The police officer denies murder charges and claims that the victim killed himself. His defense team also argued that Stempniewicz, who had long expressed a death wish, hanged himself.

“In our eyes, and in the eyes of our client, it is about a suicide,” defense lawyer, Endrik Wilhelm, said.

Col Tim Onwuatuegwu and the Biafran S. Brigade

Col Tim Onwuatuegwu and the Biafran S. Brigade was about the most dreaded Biafran Army Unit. They liberated many Biafran cities from the Nigeria forces and fallsatll the immediate fall of Biafra
28 September 1967
Enugu the capital of Republic of Biafra was in disarray. Civilians were quickly fleeing the town. Even soldiers were scampering to safety. Some hastily preparing to leave town for their respective villages. In effect, Nigerian Army thought the end of the war has come. Enugu was penetrated by Nigerian forces after the infamous Opi Junction withdrawal of Biafran troops without a fight. The saboteurs at Biafran Army Headquarters had been at work. They had ordered the withdrawal of the soldiers at the Opi Junction thereby enabling the easy run by Nigerian forces to Enugu.  The plot was, since Enugu was the capital of Biafra, its fall would have led the collapse of Biafra and the end of the war, barely months after the beginning of the war.
But they were mistaken. The fall of Enugu crystallized a new set of Biafran soldiers determined to reverse the course of the war. Unknown to the Nigerian forces, a new crop of Biafran soldiers were being galvanized by General Odimegwu Ojukwu. As Enugu was being deserted by civilians and soldiers alike, Ojukwu mounted a road block at Awkunanaw junction stopping fleeing Biafran soldiers from leaving the capital, without a fight. The sight of Odimegwu Ojukwu at the checkpoint brought a sense of order and strength, which boosted the morale of the Biafran soldiers whose commanders some of whom were the saboteurs had disorganised.  Ojukwu was at the Awkunanaw Boys School 24/7 organising a formidable Biafran strike force to defend Enugu and stop the advance of the Nigerian troops to other parts of Biafra. Trusted Biafran soldiers were quickly drafted into the new unit to be headed by the fearless Major Timothy Onwuatuegwu. Thus the Ojukwu Special Brigade otherwise known as the S. Brigade was born.
The S. Brigade had three battalions headed by newly promoted Major Archibong, Major Atumaka and Major Okoi, under the leadership of the newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Onwuatuegwu, who was later promoted to the Colonel, within a month of the formation of the S. Brigade, due to the achievements of the brigade. Onwuatuegwu’s 2nd Battalion had been disbanded before the fall of Opi Junction by the saboteurs at the Biafran Army Headquarters, as they could not eliminate him as they did Chukwuma Nzeogwu.
Onwuatuegwu, Archibong (3rd Battalion), Atumaka (2nd Battalion), and Okoi (1st Battalion) of the S. Brigade formed the super four of the S. Brigade. The S.Brigade frustrated many efforts of the Nigerian forces to capture Enugu to the surprise of everyone. They held the federal forces in an urban warfare that stopped further advance. For months the relatively well equipped Nigerian army was pinned in Enugu by the S. Brigade.  After months of formation of the S. Brigade, Col Onwuatuegwu formed the Biafran Ranger Regiment, under the command of Captain Matthias Nwadiegwu. Nwadiegwu and Onwuatuegwu had selected about two hundred recruits for training in guerrilla warfare. The emergence of the Ranger Regiment facilitated the activities of the S. Brigade. The first Ranger Regiment, commanded by the then Lieutenant Ignatius Obi Ebbe, were infiltrating enemy grounds in Enugu and wrecking tremendous havoc on them. They Rangers supported the S. Brigade battalions, in flanking operations.
A notable operation of the Ranger Regiment was the attack on Nigeria officers highly fortified rest house, at the former colonial Eastern Nigeria Government rest house at Akpasha, in March 1968. The commando-like operation of Rangers took the Nigerian forces by surprise and weakened their activities for a while. The operation killed many top officers of the Nigerian forces.
When it became clear to the Nigerian forces that they could not advance to Agwu through the defences of the S. Brigade, they resulted to penetrate via Oji River axis. The saboteurs at the Army Headquarters ordered the withdrawal of Biafran forces from Oji River junction without a fight. This forced the S. Brigade battalions to pull out to Agwu as the Nigerian forces came via Oji River axis to cut them off.
Perhaps, the greatest accomplishment of the S.Brigade was the recapture of Owerri. After the capture of Owerri, combined forces of the S. Division and 14th Division came to the rescue. By then the S. Brigade has been upgraded to a division, and the three battalion commanders Okoi, Archibong, and Atumaka who had been elevated to brigade commanders and promoted to Lt Cols. Col Onwuatuegwu, the head of the division had his eyes of the recapture of Portharcourt after the recapture of Owerri. The saboteurs had however became very worried and agitated with the recapture of Owerri. Within weeks, two commanders of the S. Division, Lt Col Atumaka and Lt Col Archibong were assassinated in the same style Nzeogwu was killed. They were both gunned down by Biafran saboteurs in a no-enemy-territory-zone. The plan was to disorganise and frustrate the S. Division. Despite the loss of two brave brigade commanders within a short period, Col Onwuatuegwu quickly reorganised the S. Brigade by infusing some new commanders into the division. A strategic plan was to bring in the commander of the Rangers Regiment, Captain Ebbe to head one of the battalions (69th Battalion) of the 67th Brigade.
With the changes, the S .Division was almost cruising to Portharcourt and have already captured Elele Rubber Plantation and environs. The saboteurs at the Army Headquarters saw this and became quite desperate. To frustrate further advance of the S. Division, Col Onwuatuegwu was removed as the commander of the S. Division and was replaced with Col Asoya. Onwuatuegwu was sent to Biafran Military School in Orlu. Lt Col Okoi the last remaining original commander of the brigades of the S. Division was equally removed and sent to Oguta were there was no strong enemy push. Col Asoya, a saboteur was brought in to disorganise and undermine the progress of the S. Division. The S. Division under the command of Col Asoya was deliberately starved of arms and ammunitions, despite the fact there arms at the division headquarters. He made various attempts to eliminate remaining brave commanders and soldiers of the S. Division. Needless to say that the advance of the S. Division towards Portharcourt was halted as soon as Asoya took over from Onwuatuegwu. It was only a matter of time, before Owerri was recaptured by Nigerian forces leading to the end of the war.
At the end of war, the Nnewi-born Onwuatuegwu who knew he has been marked by Nigerian forces because of how he frustrated their efforts to overrun Biafra and had earlier predicted that if Biafra loses the war, the Nigeria forces will torture him to death, made arrangements to escape via Cameroon. Unknown to him, some of his Nnewi friends, working for the saboteurs who were privy to his plans informed Nigerian forces. They arrested him at Ogoja and brought him back to Enugu, which was under the command of I.D Bissala. Hassan Katsina, who Nzeogwu spared his life during the January 1966 coup, because his wife was pregnant, flew down to Enugu and killed Onwuatuegwu in cold blood, while he was in detention. An act of genocide that was never investigated by the Nigerian government that had declared “No Victor No Vanquish”.

The north is finished! Previously cowed Northern minority groups begin to rear their heads up against continued Islamic Hausa-Fulani domination

The north is finished! Previously cowed Northern minority groups begin to rear their heads up against continued Islamic Hausa-Fulani domination

The Northern Nigeria has never been as balkanised as it is today. The region is slowly falling back to the pre Sokoto Caliphate status quo, after the decline of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, which had held captive most northern ethnic nationalities. This brief period of freedom of the northern ethnic group at the demise of the Kanem-Bornu empire was short-lived as the Fulanis overran the territories and once again held the lily-livered northern minorities and the Hausas, captive, under the Fulani-founded Sokoto Caliphate. Attempts by these minorities collectively referred to as the Middlebeltans
to reclaim their freedom from their Fulani masters prior Nigeria’s independence by the United Middle Belt Congress was suppressed by Ahmadu Bello and co. The party was formed to create a political platform for the various minority ethnic groups of the north littered in Benue State, Kogi State, Plateau State, Nasarawa State, Adamawa State, Kwara State and in parts of Kaduna and Kebbi States.

Ever since then the minorities have lived on the lies and deception of One-North until recently when it became clear that the Islamic Fulanis and Hausa collaborators are bent on permanently enslaving them why singing One-North. This realisation became very clear with attempts in Kaduna and Plateau States when the Fulanis and Hausas attempted to take control of strategic positions in the states. The crisis between the Southern Kaduna groups and the Hausa-Fulani led to the creation of Katsina State in 1987, so that Katsina would be Muslim Fulani-Hausa State, and Kaduna would be Christian State. However, the greed of the Fulani-Hausas would not let them forego Kaduna as they left some of their people (now in minority) back in Kaduna to continue to lord things over the rest, while the rest continued to Katsina where they also superlords. Effectively taking control of Katsina and Kaduna States. This is demonstrated by the fact that despite the fact that the Hausas-Fulani’s are in minority in Kaduna State, virtually all the facilities are sited in Zaria and most of their past leaders except Late Governor Patrick Yakowa, has come from the Fulani-Hausa extraction. The quest for the control of the government apparatus of the states has led to various deadly conflicts resulting to the deaths of thousands of people. Consequent upon this, enmity was born among these groups.

The ugly head of the Fulani-Hausa domination reared its head against the minority groups in Plateau State, but this time they resisted this domination leading to the ongoing conflicts in Plateau that has turned Jos and environs in a hellhole. Presently, according to the governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, they Fulanis are trying to takeover Benue State. The Idomas and the Tivs have become sworn enemies of the Islamic Fulanis.

However, the prospects of the minority groups escaping their clutches is given the Fulanis and Hausas sleepless nights. One consequent of this is the loss of political power in Nigeria. They are actively plotting to overrun these groups once again and cow them into submission. But it is already late they have totally lost it.

http:///BidVertiser.dbm?pid=553027&bid=1549605marketingThis was demonstrated when Goodluck Jonathan with the help of the northern minority group trounced General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) in the 2011 presidential election in many northern states. Buhari reacted to this defeat by inciting his Muslim brothers to unleash mayhem on the mostly Christian minority groups. This however widen the gap between the northern minorities and the Fulani-Hausa oligarchy by harden their hearts more against Hausa-Fulani Islamic domination.

Presently, with the approaching national conference, the Hausa and Fulanis are peeing in their pants as they do not expect the minorities to align with them in any important decision. As a result they are actively trying to discredit the conference. In addition more northern minority group are raising their voices against what they perceived as marginalisation by the Fulanis and Hausa.

Previously unheard of minority groups such as the Gbagyi ethnic nationality, whose people spread across Kaduna, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, wondered why that in spite of the contributions to national development, their numerical strength and spread, they have been inexplicably excluded from the National Conference.

Also the Kwarrarafa ethnic nationalities, found and traceable in 27 states of the country, including the FCT, also in their protest letter said that the august event will provide the constituent nationalities opportunities to be “resurrected” as they have long been “buried.”

Boko Haram JUSTIFIES Biafra and vindicates Odumegwu Ojukwu

Boko Haram JUSTIFIES Biafra and vindicates Odumegwu Ojukwu

By Abiodun Ladepo
The Boko Haram (BH) claims it is avenging the “extra-judicial” killing of its leader, Muhammed Yusuf, who died at the hands of the Nigerian Police in 1999, during the presidency of the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua – a Northern Muslim. BH waited for Jonathan, a Christian, to become president before taking terror to a new level.
It added to its manifesto the annihilation of all Christians in the North; the removal of all churches and all businesses associated with Christians from the North; the introduction of Sharia law throughout the rest of Nigeria (13 Northern states now have Sharia law); the removal of all symbols of Western-styled democracy; and the abolition of Western education altogether.  This manifesto could be dismissed as the wishful thinking of a
deranged group, except that members of BH are dead serious (no pun intended) about achieving these goals. They have essentially made Borno and Yobe States ungovernable. They have the presidency on its heels, sweating and fretting; they have the security agencies hobbled and in shambles; they have all Nigerians restive and pensive; and they have the international community paying rapt attention.
To the rest of the civilized world, BH’s activities exemplify the very definition of “Ethnic Cleansing”, genocide or Jihad. It happened in the old Yugoslavia and now there is no more Yugoslavia. It happened in Sudan, and now we have the countries of Sudan and South Sudan. It happened in Germany…the infamous Holocaust…and now we have the new Israel.
http:///BidVertiser.dbm?pid=553027&bid=1549605marketing It has happened in Nigeria before…this wanton killing, maiming and destruction of properties. Ah, you forgot? You forgot the Northern pogrom of 1966 which was the precursor to our first civil war? I say “first” because I think we are headed for the second one. During the pogrom, hordes of Hausa/Fulani people, like flies, invaded the homes of Igbo people in the North, slitting their throats and clubbing them to death…without provocation, and with utter impunity! I didn’t read this in a history book. I witnessed it with my own eyes as a kid in Zaria. I lost my innocence then. My family was spared because my father had one of those tribal marks native to Ibadan, and he was a devout Muslim.
So, today, suppose a group springs up in Enugu under the aegis of Christianity, with a name like say…Eastern Sons of Christ (ESOC), and begins the killing and maiming of all non-Christians, especially people of Hausa/Fulani extraction, along with some of their Yoruba collaborators. Imagine the ESOC laying explosives in and around businesses, mosques and homes owned by people other than members of the ESOC tribe. Imagine a similar group, under the name of say…Western Sons of Christ (WESOC), stands up its operations in Ibadan, targeting all Hausa/Fulani Muslims, along with their Yoruba collaborators (there are many Muslims in the Yoruba kingdom). Imagine yet another group springs up in Port Harcourt, under the name of say…Southern Sons of Christ (SOSOC), killing people of Hausa/Fulani extraction – Muslims, along with their Yoruba collaborators.
If the ESOC became a terror group like the Boko Haram (BH) has become, it would be justified. It could claim vengeance for the thousands of Igbo people that were, without provocation, ruthlessly massacred by the Hausa/Fulani during the pogrom. It could further justify its actions by claiming more maltreatment during the ensuing civil war (1967 – 1970), and yet more maltreatment following the so-called “No Victor No Vanquished” truce evident in the continued marginalization of the Igbo in most spheres of influence in Nigeria.
If the WESOC became a terror group like the BH, it could claim that it was tired of being caught between the Hausa/Fulani Vs Igbo (Muslim/Christian) fights. WESOC could say that it frequently suffered with ESOC each time the Northern Muslims embarked on one of their barbaric extermination missions and that ESOC never gave it enough credit. Instead, ESOC blamed WESOC for not joining in the Biafra cause. (WESOC can’t even claim any monolithic Christian stronghold in its geographical area, and can’t state with any degree of certainty which of the two major religions enjoys a numerical superiority in its communities.) WESOC can further claim that when one of its illustrious sons, a strong Muslim for that matter – MKO Abiola, won the election for President, the Hausa/Fulani Muslims, before morphing into BH, killed him rather than allow him to rule.
And if the SOSOC was to become a terror group exactly like the BH, it could claim that its previous acts of blowing up oil pipelines and kidnapping for ransom did not fully achieve SOSOC’s goal of 50% oil revenue allocation. It could argue that “our oil” was being used to build skyscrapers, mansions and “six-star” hotels in Abuja, Sokoto, Maiduguri and Yola, while “our people” in the Niger-Delta couldn’t fish or farm without fear of pollution. It could argue vengeance for the brazen, state-sponsored killing of one of its illustrious sons – Ken Saro-Wiwa, during the presidency of a Hausa/Fulani man and the desecration of his body by pouring acid on it.
In essence, we could have anarchy all across Nigeria, not just in the Northeastern States and Abuja, and no one would have peace. These groups could all find nebulous excuses to justify unleashing mayhem on the rest of the country like the BH is now doing and we would have our second civil war.
We had the Maitatsine riots of 1980, largely in the same Northeastern area. We have had other similar incidents in the intervening years, all aimed at building a homogenous, Islamic caliphate in Northern Nigeria. The military governments of the day easily put down those riots and attacks. But that was before the advent of the use explosives as weapons of terror. In 1980, Maitatsine rioters, progenitors of the BH sect, used knives…long knives…to attack Christians. Now they use guns…machine guns…and explosives to mow down innocent, unharmed people. Then they brazenly take onto the internet to claim responsibility for their dastardly acts. And like Al Qaida, they have amorphous, nameless and faceless leadership.
It is clear that since Nigeria’s amalgamation, the Hausa/Fulani Muslims of the North thought of themselves as superior beings, compared to the Christians of the South, and particularly the largely-Christian Igbo people. In fact, if you have the trust and confidence of a Northerner, you will frequently hear him derisively refer to Igbo people as “impure” and “lower-than-dogs”. This may sound like I am fanning the embers of ethnic crisis here. But I am stating the facts. I know that Igbo people in power today are aware of this, and so are their Yoruba and, of course, their Hausa counterparts. They are just too timid to say it in the open. I am not in power and I am not timid. I grew up in Zaria as a practicing Muslim. I attended Arabic/Islamic evening classes, lived in Kano and Maiduguri and finished my elementary school in Bukuru, near Jos. I also speak Hausa better than I speak English. So, before anybody castigates me as a basher of the North or of Muslims, they better take cognizance of the fact that I had firsthand experience. Notice how no Hausa/Fulani of significant profile, like say…the Sardauna of Sokoto, the Emir of Zaria, the Emir of Gwandu, the Emir of Maiduguri, Ibrahim Babangida, Mohammadu Buhari, Abubakar Atiku, Abubakar Umar, etc…has come out to openly denounce the BH sect. Their quiet acquiescence should not be interpreted as cowardly or coincidental. It is calculated.
The hatred of Igbo people and Christians by the Hausa/Fulani people remains palpable. Northern Muslims just manage to tolerate them. If they thought they could harm a Christian or an Easterner and get away with it, they would do it in a jiffy, without compunction and without remorse. And they would do it in the name of Allah. I have read the Qur’an, to include the Hadiths, and I have not found any portion of it where the Prophet Mohammed (PBOH) enjoined, sanctioned, urged or ordered adherents of Islam to destroy believers of other faiths. Of course, we have ultra-right-wingers in all religions, including Christianity, but none is waging such destructive and bloody war against “non-believers” like our Northern brothers. I think it is even tantamount to heresy referring to them as “brothers” those who have taken self-righteous indignation beyond any scintilla of reason. They are reprobates.
So, if the West, the East and the South conclude that the North has gone beyond redemption, why not grant the North its request? Why not draw a real, physical border with the North and allow it to rule its people like it wishes? By now, we all should know that no attempt at placating the Hausa/Fulani people would prevent them from sliding into their banal recidivism. I have absolutely no problem having to apply for a visa to visit my Alma Mata in Zaria or Bukuru. By their acts, the BH sect has vindicated Odumegwu Ojukwu and proved the venerable Obafemi Awolowo wrong about Biafra. Awolowo fought to “keep Nigeria one” but it is now clear that the task had always been only one-sided. The North obviously did not get that memorandum and so did not share the same objective. We need to quickly adorn the Ikemba of Nnewi with rose-bedecked garlands for being brave and visionary enough, as far back as 1966, to attempt Biafra. Ojukwu, who was humiliated, harangued, vilified and exiled for knowing (that far back) that the North was always going to be implacable, should be celebrated as a hero and rewarded as such before he passes on to the great beyond. And I am not being facetious or sarcastic.
The North now wants its own country – one ruled by Sharia and devoid of any semblance of Western civilization. We should let them have it peacefully. Those who have called for a Sovereign National Conference should redouble their efforts. Nigerians need to talk amongst themselves now so that they can peacefully decide how to coexist. Otherwise, the inevitable combustion will swallow everybody. If you have not been directly (or even remotely) touched by the BH attacks, you may not appreciate the urgency of deciding peacefully the future of Nigeria. If you have never seen a full blown war firsthand, I hope that you and your family continue to be protected from finding out how it feels. It is not a pretty sight.

After shameful rejection by APC Tom Ikimi concludes plan to defect to PDP

After suffering rejection by a party he helped midwife, the erstwhile Nigeria Foreign Affairs minister and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Tom Ikimi is on the verge of leaving his party for the one he once rejected. This will be another loss by the APC of a senior member to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ikimi, the former chairman of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) during the third republic has concluded plans to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which he left nearly 10 years ago to team up with opposition politicians.

Ikimi was a founding member of Action Congress in 2006, a party that later metamorphosed into Action Congress of Nigeria before joining other opposition parties to found APC. An associate of the politician told The Cable that Ikimi would announce his decision to leave the opposition party “anytime from now”. “He has lost faith in APC. He has been a pillar of the opposition for years and was shocked at the appalling way he was treated at the last convention of APC. They showed him no respect at all,” the associate said.

Ikimi had wanted to be national chairman of the party but the hierarchy favoured Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former governor of Edo State. The opposition to the candidature of Ikimi was said to have been led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who was reportedly not comfortable with the “antecedents” of Ikimi. Ikimi was so angered by the adoption of Oyegun as chairman that he wrote a letter openly criticising Tinubu. He accused Tinubu of bearing a grudge against him because of his insistence on a religiously balanced APC ticket in the presidential election. Ikimi also accused Tinubu of unilaterally picking all members of the APC national executive council at the June convention. But an associate of Tinubu had told The Cable then that Ikimi could not have been made APC chairman. “We all know his antecedents. It will be suicidal to make Ikimi chairman. He will sell us to President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said. Ikimi’s candidature was allegedly financed by a top member of the PDP board of trustees. “It is unfortunate that nobody has tried to reach out to Chief Ikimi to mend fences after what they did to him at the Eagle Square. Not even as a mere gesture. He has no other option that to leave the party, after all his efforts dating back to 2006,” the source told The Cable. After gaining momentum from the defection of PDP governors and top members of the ruling party to its ranks last year, APC has now found itself in a position where its members are defecting to the ruling party. Former presidential candidate Malam Nuhu Ribadu is the latest figure to leave APC for PDP, following in the footsteps of former governors Attahiru Bafarawa and Ibrahim Shekarau as well as Brig-General Mohamed Marwa (rtd). Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State, is also believed to be on his way to PDP.

Meanwhile, the APC, however, is set to gain a big fish following plans by speaker of the house of representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to leave PDP for the opposition party.
